How AIs decide who to recommend (and how to show up in them)
July 01, 2026 · PromptOps
Short answer: AIs don’t “know” which companies exist — they query search engines behind the scenes and cite what they find there. To be recommended, your company needs to be indexed in those engines, with clear, structured content. The most decisive engine today is Bing, which powers ChatGPT and Copilot.
Why this matters
More and more people ask ChatGPT or Gemini before they buy. If the AI can’t find your company in the index it uses, you simply don’t show up in the answer — no matter how good your service is.
What to do, in practice
- Get into Bing’s index (Bing Webmaster Tools + IndexNow). It’s the foundation for ChatGPT and Copilot.
- Write “liftable” content: a direct answer at the top, content in blocks, an FAQ.
- Use structured data (Schema.org) so the AI understands what you do.
- Keep content fresh and publish regularly.
Conclusion
AI visibility is the new frontier of marketing. Whoever structures their content and gets into the right indexes first has the advantage — and there’s still very little competition.
